Senate Committee on Appropriations

Committee Background

Year Established

1867

Key Issues

Allocating federal funds prior to Treasury expenditure based on budget authority limits; supplemental appropriations bills

Jurisdiction

The committee is made up of 12 subcommittees, each with a specific segment of the federal budget under its jurisdiction. Following the submission of the president’s budget, each of the subcommittees hold justification hearings related to the agency’s budget requests. Next, the subcommittees make their suballocations and draft, mark up, and report their respective subcommittee appropriations bills. These bills are then considered separately by the full Committee.
