FBI to conduct private investigation into sexual assault claims against Kavanaugh
Upon the conclusion of the Senate Judiciary’s confirmation hearings for Judge Brett Kavanaugh and the accompanying testimony of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, Sen. Jeff Flake conditioned his support on a week-long investigation of Blasey Ford’s claims. Instead of the Senate conducting the investigation, the FBI will re-open Kavanaugh’s background check to explore the matter. To uphold our democratic norms and institutions, it is essential that this investigation be done honorably, conclusively and decisively – without corruption or politicization – for the stability of our democracy, the integrity of our institutions and the strength of our rule of law. The FBI must not be influenced by the Trump administration or congressional partisanship. The final report must be transparent about the investigation’s methods and findings.
